Ballston NY Non Profits: Ballston Area Recreation Commission

BARC Logo

The Ballston Area Recreation Commission had created affordable programs which allow kids residing in the Ballston NY area to have a chance to learn about exciting subjects or play sports, especially if they are not on a team.

There are numerous programs offered through BARC:

  • Over the summer, kids in grades 7 and up can register for a small sum of $15 per child (with a cap of $35 for families of three or more) to play Masters soccer on different teams every Wednesday at 9 pm from July 8 to Sept 9. A Fall Soccer program is also available for younger children, in K-9. This program lets kids play for recreation and to compete on one week night at 6 and one Saturday per week. This program is special because it is specifically aimed at kids who are not on school sports teams, but still want the chance to play.
  • Through late July and early August 2009, youth attending fourth grade and higher can sign up to play tennis. The scheduling is highly flexible, with two sessions, one from July 6-23, and the other from July 27-August 13, both with Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday options available. Kids will enjoy this experience and be challenged as they are separated according to experience.
  • For very young children, in grades K-5, Mr. D's Dino Discovery & Sea Creatures is sure to appeal to a child's sense of wonder. This class teaches children simultaneously about the amazing lizard-like creatures which preceded homo sapiens and the still-unexplored wonders of the big blue wet thingy and its life forms (some of which date back to dinosaur times). This class lasts a week in July, and offers morning, afternoon, and full sessions.
  • The Youth Theatre group begins work in March 2010 on a major musical production with its final performances this year of Rodgers & Hammstein's State Fair being presented Friday, August 14 and 21 at 7 pm and Saturday, August 15 & 22 at both 2 and 7 pm. During the school year Saturday Enrichment classes are offered both in the fall and winter with offerings such as: Tae Kwon Do, Science, Dance, Spanish, Arts & Crafts, gymnastic, and many more options. Similar courses are offered in the summer on Monday through Friday for three weeks. There is no charge for those students who attend. In the winter, basketball is offered for those boys and girls in grades 3 to 9.

The BARC works closely with the Ballston area schools, but is not affiliated with public education. Their myriads of programs are available through the help and support of the cities of Milton, Malta, Ballston, and the Village of Ballston Spa.
