About this event
Fans of campy 80s monster movies will not want to miss the new creature feature Bloodspawn, screening at the Scene One Spectrum 8 Theaters, Friday 5/16 through Thursday 5/22, at 8 pm each night. One of the film's producers will be in attendance on the opening Friday for Q&A after.
Bloodspawn comes to Albany having just finished its film festival run where it was awarded Best Feature at the Grindhouse Planet Film Festival in Leicester, England. Bloodspawn takes place in the Cherokee territory of 1839 Southern Appalachia during the final cruel days of the Indian Removal Act. A small group of misfits are trapped and surrounded by an evil ravenous creature of Cherokee folklore, the Uktena. The unlikely allies must put aside their differences to battle this unleashed ancient curse before it's too late.
Bloodspawn is billed as a fun-filled classic folk horror “popcorn movie” with a unique retro look, style, and soundtrack. Buttered and seasoned with a healthy dose of old- school practical puppet effects for the monster, rather than just all modern CGI elements, Bloodspawn plays as a nostalgic campy grindhouse-style homage to the creature features of the 1980s.
Running at a lean 76 minutes, Bloodspawn is not yet rated but contains violent content that may be too intense for some viewers, so viewer discretion is advised.
Dread Central gives it 4 out of 5 stars, and writes, “Bloodspawn is certainly a creature feature which fans of retro monster movies will cherish.” Kaiju United proclaims it as “a film that brings back the joy of fun, campy monster movies.”
The film stars Raw Leiba (Bone Tomahawk), Roger Willie (Windtalkers), R. Keith Harris (AMC’s The Walking Dead), with special appearance by indie horror legend, Bill Oberst Jr. (3 From Hell), and also Eboh Ajeroh, Sara Romanello, and Evanna Parker.
