"The Paradox of Modern American Agriculture" is subject of Dr. Gary Kleppels March 23 presentation at City Hall in Saratoga Springs.
For information, contact: Celeste Caruso, co-chair, 339-2907.
With Spring arriving March 20th and the growing season almost upon us, Sustainable Saratoga, an all-volunteer organization encouraging efforts to improve the quality of life in Saratoga while conserving the vitality and diversity of regional resources, will present a thought-provoking program on our agricultural system, facilitated by Sustainable Saratoga's Farming, Open Space and Natural Resources sub-committee.
On Tuesday, March 23 at 7 p.m., on the third floor of Saratoga Springs City Hall at 474 Broadway, Gary S. Kleppel, PhD, professor of biological sciences at SUNY Albany and director of the University?s Biodiversity Conservation and Policy Program will address the monthly Sustainable Saratoga meeting.
Kleppel explains that his presentation, The Paradox of Modern American Agriculture, explores how modern American agriculture provides us with open space and beautiful landscapes, protects biological diversity - and provides nutritious, high quality and humanely produced food to the American people. On the other hand, he calls that same modern American approach a ?major source of pollution, a cause of biodiversity loss and a public health menace.
The professor says his contradictory descriptions represent the paradox of agriculture, formed by the very different ways modern farming is practiced. His Sustainable Saratoga presentation will detail those differences, as well as offer suggestions about what all of us can do to encourage sustainable farming. The key, Kleppel concludes, is not to preserve farmland, or to protect farmers - but to support American farming.
In addition to the presentation by Dr. Kleppel, Sustainable Saratoga's sub-committees will provide reports on the groups various sustainability initiatives. Anyone interested in the future of our environment and the quality (and threats to) our food sources should find the program both timely and informative. Please join Sustainable Saratoga and our members on Tuesday, March 23!

Copland: "Music for the Theater"
John Harbison: Symphony No. 4 "Tragic"
Timothy Andres: Concertino for violin/viola and Orchestra (world premiere)
Owen Dalby, Violin/Viola
Haydn: Symphony 82, "The Bear"
John Harbison is one of America's leading composers. Not only has his music been played frequently by all of Americas leading orchestras (especially the Boston Symphony), but he has had a long, extremely productive with the Albany Symphony and Music Director David Alan Miller. The orchestra has performed many of his major works and has made two CDs of his music on the Albany Records label. Thus, it is fitting that he serve as the orchestras first Mellon-funded "Composer-Mentor." In that role, he will be featured on two of the orchestras subscription concerts and the orchestra will produce a CD of two of his major works. In addition, he will act as curator of this concert. The program features a major, little-known symphony by Harbison, No. 4 "Tragic." This work was written during a very difficult time in Harbisons life, when one of his closest relatives was facing a life-threatening medical diagnosis. Harbison eloquently expressed his pain and awareness of the fragility of life in the slow movement of this symphony. In addition to the symphony, Harbison has invited a young composer who worked with him at Tanglewood, Timothy Andres, to contribute a new "debut composer" work to the program. Timo is creating a Concertino for a brilliant young violinist and violist, Owen Dalby, which will feature Dalby playing both violin and viola (a double concerto for one player, if you will). Also on the program, two exquisite works by major composers closest to Harbisons heart, Coplands sizzling, jazzy early work, "Music for the Theater," and a glorious symphony Haydn wrote for his Paris audience, Symphony No. 82, "The Bear."
