For the past 10 years the Zim Smith Trail in Malta NY has offered locals a great place to bike, walk, roller-blade and even snowmobile in the winter. The 9-mile trail that travels between Ballston Spa and Clifton Park has now drawn the attention of the federal government.
The U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, and National Park Service Director, Jonathan Jarvis, designated the the Zim Smith trail a National Recreation Trail in May of 2012 along with 54 other trails spanning across 23 states.
In order for a trail to be recognized it must be an ‘exemplary trail of local and regional significance.’
According to the Interior Department and the National Park Service, the Zim Smith trail is just that. It serves as ‘the backbone of the Saratoga County Trail network‘ and was the only New York state trail to be recognized for the past 3 years.
The trail is paved offering a smooth ride for bikers and strollers and has playgrounds, picnic areas and wildlife along the way.
Do you frequent the Zim Smith Trail? Are you surprised by the recognition?
