Gifts Ideas Based On How Long You've Been Dating

Valentine's Day giftGiving a nice gift on Valentine's Day can be an awkward task, especially when you don't know the person that well! If you have only been dating your significant other for a few weeks or a few months find out what gifts to give based on the length of time you've been together.

If You Have Been Dating One Month or Less:

(Stick to spending around $10-$20 max)
First started seeing each other? Chances are you don’t know much about the person, but you still want to get them something nice. You don’t want to seem like you are moving too fast, but still don’t want to seem like you are avoiding the day. It's actually the perfect time to be cliché! Stick with the basics:
  • Get a Card: Cards are underrated! This is always a thoughtful touch to add to any gift and lets the person know you care and want to get to know them better.
  • A Solitaire Rose: While a dozen roses may seem a bit overkill for this stage in the relationship, a single rose can be a sweet and romantic gesture that is more appropriate than a bouquet.
  • Chocolates: You can pick up generic chocolates at the grocery store, or get more creative by selecting handmade truffles and goodies from a local candy shop.
  • Movie Night: While a romantic lovers' night dinner out might actually be a bit awkward, a movie night in can be just as romantic! Pop some popcorn or enjoy some hot cocoa and curl up with a movie you both enjoy. Feel like watching something romantic? See our top Valentine's Day movie suggestions »

If You Have Been Dating Around 2- 5 Months:

(Spend around $20-$50 max)
At this point, you might have been together long enough to be a little romantic. Don’t think too hard about what to get your significant other, here are some ideas:
  • Flowers: A dozen or two dozen roses can make a big impact at this point without seeming like overkill. Select the perfect boquet from a local florist, and watch her face light up!
  • Edibles: A basket full of goodies, from wine and cheese to chocolates and candy, is always a safe bet. Be sure to find a gift basket (or put one together yourself) that suits the specific tastes of your sweetheart.
  • Sports Blanket: By this point, you know his favorite sports team. A cozy sports blanket for the two of you to cuddle beneath (or other sports related gift) would be a great token of your affection.
  • Date Night: It may be time to enjoy a romantic dinner out on Valentine's Day. Find a local restaurant and make reservations.
  • Movies: If you are still getting to know each other, take a trip to the movies and then grab some coffee afterwards!

If You Have Been Dating Around 6-12 Months:

(Spending $50-$200 max)
Things are getting a bit more serious at this point, and you know the person much better then you did when you first started dating. It is time to make the gift more personal.
  • Sports/Concert tickets: Find out what is going on in the area and get tickets to something you can enjoy together.
  • Jewelry: You are allowed to be a little sappy if you have made it to 6 months. The person has stuck around that long, they deserve something nice. Jewelry doesn’t have to be super expensive, and it demonstrates that you put some thought into what they might like.
  • Picture of the two of you: A picture is a nice way to highlight a memory that you have had together. Have the photo frame engraved with a special message for your sweetheart. You can also put together an album of photos and have the cover engraved. Ideas: "The beginning of something wonderful!" "The day I discovered I love you" "Memories worth cherishing" you get the idea.
  • Perfume / Cologne: Scent is the strongest sense connected to memory. This is a nice gift to give, and the person will be thinking about you when they put it on!
  • Dinner Out: This is the perfect time to enjoy a romantic, candlelit meal for two on Valentine's Day at a local restaurant. Try to find someplace that you haven't tried before so the night will bring something new and adventurous. (Though don't stray far from the cuisine you know you both like).

If You Have Been Seeing Each Other For Years:

Anything goes! Your relationship has gone somewhere and although it may seem ok to be lazy after all this time, it is actually the best – and most important – time to be personal and put some thought into what gift you are going to give your significant other.

  • Weekend getaway: Take a weekend off! Find a nice place to relax to relax for the weekend and be tourists for a couple days!
  • Gift certificate to local spa to enjoy a professional massage side by side.
  • Dinner Out: It never gets old.
  • And don't forget: A thoughtful card wins big points!

Heart IMPORTANT NOTE: The key thing to remember is that the best gifts are not always the most expensive ones. Oftentimes homemade gifts from the heart are more impressive than anything you can buy. Don’t feel like you need to spend a lot to make him/her feel special. In fact, one of the most valuable gifts is just spending time together, or experiencing new things. The ideas and dollar amounts listed above are only to help you determine what might be appropriate for spending.
